Miraculous Staircase of Saint Joseph

This is the miraculous staircase of Saint Joseph at Loretto Chapel in Santa Fé, New Mexico. U.S.A., which, after 134 years since it was built in 1878, still confounds architects, engineers, and master craftsmen in the physics of its construction and remains inexplicable in view of its baffling design considerations. The unusual helix shaped spiral staircase has two complete 360° turns, stands 20 feet high up to the choir loft and has no newel (center pole) to support it as most circular stairways have. Its entire weight rests solely on its base and against the choir loft - a mystery that defies all laws of gravity, it should have crashed to the floor the moment anyone stepped on it, and yet it is still in use daily for over a hundred years. The risers of the 33 steps are all of the same height. Made of an apparently extinct wood species, it was constructed with only square wooden pegs without glue or nails. At the time it was built, the stairway had no banisters. These were added 10 years later in 1888 by Phillip A. Hesch at the Sisters' request.

Scale model simulation of how the Staircase looked
between 1877-1887 before the banisters were added

There are four mysteries that surround the spiral staircase in the Loretto Chapel: the identity of its builder; the physics of its construction which defies all laws of gravity; origin of the type of wood used which does not exist in the entire region or anywhere near it; and the staircase which has 33 steps, the age of Jesus Christ.

Over the years, many have flocked to the Loretto Chapel to see the Miraculous Staircase. The case had been investigated and studied. The staircase has been the subject of many articles, and re-enacted in TV specials, and movies including "Unsolved Mysteries" and the 1998 television movie entitled "The Staircase", starring Barbara Hershey and William Petersen.

According to the accounts of Mother Magdalen, Mother Superior of the Sisters of Loretto, when the Chapel was completed in 1878, there was no way to access the choir loft twenty-two feet above. Local carpenters were summoned to address the problem, but all concluded that access to the loft would have to be via ladder as a staircase would interfere with the interior space of the small Chapel. The Sisters of Loretto made a novena to Saint Joseph, the Patron Saint of Carpenters, and on the ninth and final day of prayer, a gray-haired man came to the convent on a donkey with a toolbox and approached Mother Magdalen. He asked if he might try to help the Sisters by building a stairway but he needed total privacy. Mother gave her consent gladly, and he set to work and locked himself in the chapel for three months. The only tools he had were a saw, a hammer, a T-square, and a few tubs of water for soaking the wood to make it pliable.

When the staircase was completed, the carpenter disappeared without pay or thanks. The Loretto Sisters ran an advertisement in a local newspaper in search for the man but found no trace of him. They offered a reward for the identity of the man, but it was never claimed. But Mother Magdalen and her community of Sisters and students knew that the stairway was Saint Joseph’s answer to their fervent prayers.  Many were convinced that the humble carpenter was none other than Saint Joseph himself, as his silent, prayerful labors were precisely the virtues one would expect of the foster-Father of Our Divine Lord.

One of the most baffling things about the stairway, however, is the perfection of the curves of the stringers. The wood is spliced along the sides of the stringers with nine splices on the outside and seven on the inside, each fitted with the greatest precision. Each piece is perfectly curved. How this was done in the 1870's by a single man with only the most primitive tools is inexplicable to modern architects. Many experts have tried to identify the wood and surmise where it came from, but no one has ever been able to give a satisfactory answer to this mystery. The treads were constantly walked on for over a hundred years since the stairway was built, but showed signs of wear only on the edges. The wood was identified as an "edge-grained fir of some sort", but others say it is a long-leaf yellow pine, but the hard-wearing wood definitely did not come from New Mexico. Where the mysterious carpenter got this wood remains a mystery up to this day.

Brief History of the Chapel of Loretto

In 1610, the Spanish Catholic conquistadors and missionaries founded La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Assisi, or Royal City of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi, known today as Santa Fé, the capital of New Mexico. It was occupied by Indians, Mexicans, and Spanish and was under Spanish control until a war which placed this area under the rule of the New Republic of Mexico for 25 years. Later, as a result of the US victory in the Mexican war, this southwest area was ceded to the United States in 1848. At the end of the Old Santa Fe Trail stands the Loretto Chapel.

The history of the Loretto Chapel began when Bishop Jean Baptisite Lamy was appointed Vicar-Apostolic by the Church to the New Mexico Territory in 1850. Bishop Lamy, seeking to spread the Catholic faith and bring an educational system to this new territory, began a letter writing plea for priests, brothers and nuns to preach and teach. In 1852, the Sisters of Loretto responded to Lamy’s pleas and sent seven sisters and opened the Academy of Our Lady of Light (Loretto) in 1853. The campus covered a square block with 10 buildings. Through tuition’s for the girls schooling, donations, and from the sisters own inheritances from their families, they built their school and chapel. Sisters Magdalen, Catherine, Hilaria, and Roberta made up the community.  At the direction of Bishop Lamy, Sister Magdalen was appointed Superior of the Sisters.

It was then decided that the school needed a chapel. Property was purchased and work began on July 25, 1873, with Antoine Mouly as the architect. Mouly and his son, Projectus Mouly, were brought in by Bishop Lamy from Paris, France initially to build what is known today as the St. Francis Cathedral. Bishop Lamy encouraged the sisters to utilize the Moulys to design and build their chapel. In the early 1800s, the older Mouley had been involved in the renovation of King Louis IX's Sainte Chapelle. It was the favorite chapel of Bishop Lamy from his early days in Paris, France. Hence, the Loretto Chapel was patterned by Mouley after the Sainte Chapelle in the Gothic Revival style, complete with spires, buttresses, and stained glass windows imported from France. It is reported that the sisters pooled their own inheritances to raise the $30,000 required to build this beautiful Gothic chapel.

The Loretto Chapel

The Chapel was to be 25 feet by 75 feet with a height of 85 feet. Stones for the Chapel were quarried from locations around Santa Fe including Cerro Colorado, about 20 miles from Santa Fe. The ornate stained glass was purchased in 1876 from the DuBois Studio in Paris, and was first sent to New Orleans by sailing ship and then by paddle boat to St. Louis, Missouri where it was taken by covered wagon over the Old Santa Fe Trail to the Chapel.

According to the annals of Mother Magdalen, the construction of the Chapel was placed under the special patronage of St. Joseph "in whose honor we communicated every Wednesday, that he might assist us."  Then she adds, "Of his powerful help we have been witnesses on several occasions."

The Chapel work progressed and it was not until it was nearly finished that they realized that there was no stairway to connect the Chapel to the choir loft. Moreover, the loft was so exceptionally high that there was no longer any space for a stairway. Mother Magdalen summoned many carpenters to try to build a stairway; but each, in his turn, measured and thought and then shook his head sadly saying, "It can't be done, Mother”. Mother Magdalen decided, "Let's wait awhile and make a novena." So the Sisters of Loretto made a novena to St. Joseph for a suitable solution to the problem. Then the gray-haired man came to the convent and built them the miraculous staircase.

The Chapel was completed in April 25, 1878 and has since seen many additions and renovations such as the introduction of the Stations of the Cross, the Gothic altar and the frescos during the 1890s. Bishop Lamy dedicated the Chapel and named it, Chapel of Our Lady of Light. It was, in many ways, a visible symbol of the courageous Bishop's opposition to "Americanism", which was condemned by Pope Leo XIII in 1899.

Tragically, in the devastating aftermath of Vatican Council II, religious vocations dwindled, and the Loretto "sisters" of the new post-conciliar religion, having first betrayed their Order by discarding their traditional religious garb and way of life, ended by betraying the faith and devotion of Mother Magdalen and her Sisters by selling the entire Academy grounds, including the miraculous Chapel, to a commercial property developer.  Most of the historical monuments of the love for souls, zeal for the Catholic Faith, and pious devotion of Bishop Lamy, Mother Magdalen, and the Sisters who established the Loreto Academy of Our Lady of Light were demolished to make way for monuments of secular "progress" (greed and materialism) upon their ruins. Sadly, what the secular government had been unable to accomplish for almost a century, the post-Vatican II church did in a matter of a few short years.

The Loretto Academy was closed in 1968, and the property was put up for sale. At the time of sale in 1971, Our Lady of Light Chapel was informally deconsecrated as a Catholic Chapel.

Fortunately, however, there was such an outcry from the devoted people of Santa Fe, including many of the alumni of the Academy, that the Chapel with the miraculous stairs was preserved as a national monument, albeit amidst the commercialism which surrounds it.

Loretto Chapel is now a private museum operated and maintained, in part, for the preservation of the Miraculous Staircase and the Chapel itself. To this very day, those who love and revere good St. Joseph, can still go and gaze upon that which is, without doubt, a visible testimony that Saint Joseph indisputably finds ways to provide for those who humbly and confidently place their needs in his capable hands.

Medjugorje - Aparición a Mirjana del 18 de marzo de 2016

Apparition of the Queen of Peace to Mirjana, march 18, 2016.
"Dear children, with a motherly heart filled with love for you, my children, I desire to teach you complete trust in God the Father. I desire for you to learn by an internal gaze and internal listening to follow God's will. I desire for you to learn to boundlessly trust in His mercy and His love, as I always trusted. Therefore, my children, cleanse your hearts. Free yourselves from everything that binds you to only what is earthly and permit what is of God to form your life by your prayer and sacrifice so that God's Kingdom may be in your heart; that you may begin to live proceeding from God the Father; that you may always strive to walk with my Son. But for all of this, my children, you must be poor in spirit and filled with love and mercy. You must have pure and simple hearts and always be ready to serve. My children, listen to me, I speak for your salvation. Thank you."

March 18, 2016 Medjugorje Message

Today, March 18, 2016, Our Lady appeared to the visionary Mirjana at the Blue Cross on Apparition Hill in Medjugorje.

Mirjana experienced daily apparitions from June 24/25, 1981 to December 25, 1982 when Our Lady entrusted her with the tenth secret and promised to appear to her once a year, on March 18, for the rest of her life. She also told Mirjana that she would appear at other times, and since 1987 Mirjana has also experienced apparitions on the second of every month.

March 18 is Mirjana's birthday, but according to Mirjana, that is not why Our Lady appears to her on that day. Mirjana says that when the events foretold in the secrets begin to happen, we will know why Our Lady chose that date.

Today's apparition lasted from 1:50 PM to 1:56 PM. Our Lady gave the following message:

Dear children,

With a motherly heart filled with love for you, my children, I desire to teach you complete trust in God the Father. I desire for you to learn by an internal gaze and internal listening to follow God's will. I desire for you to learn to boundlessly trust in His mercy and His love, as I always trusted.

Therefore, my children, cleanse your hearts. Free yourselves from everything that binds you to only what is earthly and permit what is of God to form your life by your prayer and sacrifice—so that God´s Kingdom may be in your heart; that you may begin to live proceeding from God the Father; that you may always strive to walk with my Son.

But for all of this, my children, you must be poor in spirit and filled with love and mercy. You must have pure and simple hearts and always be ready to serve.

My children, listen to me, I speak for your salvation.

Thank you.

*Our Lady often covers several related subjects in her messages, so to help make it easier to read, we've broken today's message down into several paragraphs.

**It's been said that Our Lady's messages speak to each of us individually, so we suggest replacing the "children" in "Dear children" with your first name when you read it. And when she says "my children," imagine her saying "my child" directly to you.

Medjugorje: - A Message from Our Lady

Message of September 2, 2011 to Mirjana

"Dear children; With all my heart and soul full of faith and love in the Heavenly Father, I gave my Son to you and am giving Him to you anew. My Son has brought you, the people of the entire world, to know the only true God and His love. He has led you on the way of truth and made you brothers and sisters.

Therefore, my children, do not wander, do not close your heart before that truth, hope and love. Everything around you is passing and everything is falling apart, only the glory of God remains.

Therefore, renounce everything that distances you from the Lord. Adore Him alone, because He is the only true God. I am with you and I will remain with you. I am especially praying for the shepherds that they may be worthy representatives of my Son and may lead you with love on the way of truth. Thank you."

Dear Family of Mary!
This picture (above) was taken on March 2, 2016, on the day of the apparition to Mirjiana. It was posted by "Medjugorje.info" with the following caption:
"MIRACLE in Medjugorje: Did Our Lady appear in the sky?"
The article went on to say that this picture was submitted to them by someone in Medjugorje who claimed to take it on the day of Mirjana's apparition. The article concluded that "Many believe that Our Lady sent it as another proof that she is truly with us."
It is a striking photo. The more I look at it, the more amazed I am. Many cloud photos I have seen have been pretty vague, so that you really have to struggle to find the image in it. But this one is very clear, and beautiful!
Our Lady has spoken about the many signs that are given in Medjugorje, especially in the sky. She doesn't want us to be frightened by them or preoccupied by them, and assures us they are from God only as a help to us in conversion. Here are three messages that contain Our Lady's advice about how to receive signs:

September 2, 2007 "Dear children, In this time of God's signs, do not be afraid because I am with you. The great love of God sends me to lead you to salvation. Give me your simple hearts, purified by fasting and prayer. Only in the simplicity of your hearts is your salvation. I will be with you and lead you. Thank you."

October 2, 2010 "Dear children; Today I call you to a humble, my children, humble devotion. Your hearts need to be just. May your crosses be your means in the battle against the sins of the present time. May your weapon be patience and boundless love, a love that knows to wait and which will make you capable of recognizing God's signs, that your life, by humble love, may show the truth to all those who seek it in the darkness of lies. My children, my apostles, help me to open the paths to my Son. Once again I call you to pray for your shepherds. Alongside them, I will triumph. Thank you."

July 25, 2014 "Dear children! You are not aware of the graces that you are living at this time in which the Most High is giving you signs for you to open and convert. Return to God and to prayer, and may prayer begin to reign in your hearts, families and communities, so that the Holy Spirit may lead and inspire you to every day be more open to God's will and to His plan for each of you. I am with you and with the saints and angels intercede for you. Thank you for having responded to my call."

These signs are meant to draw us to God, to help us to convert, and to confirm us on our path to holiness. They are glimpses into the spiritual world, little lights that grab our attention, and turn us to thoughts of the eternal. We are blessed in these days, especially in Medjugorje, to receive so many signs. We need them. As the darkness grows in the world, these signs catch our attention and help us to believe.

I love this sign of Our Lady in the clouds. It is beautiful. And it signifies that she is with us, she is here with us to help us. As she said in 2007, "Dear children, In this time of God's signs, do not be afraid because I am with you. The great love of God sends me to lead you to salvation. Give me your simple hearts, purified by fasting and prayer. Only in the simplicity of your hearts is your salvation. I will be with you and lead you. Thank you."
"I will be with you and lead you."
Are we not the most blessed of children?

Dear Family of Mary!

Our Lady's message of March 2, 2016 is so incredibly rich! We have much to receive from her words. But to begin with I gathered some scriptures that connect with Our Lady's words. We might pray over this message with these scriptures to see what the Holy Spirit will say to us!
Medjugorje, Message March 2, 2016

"Dear children, my coming to you is a gift from the Heavenly Father for you. Through His love I am coming to help you to find the way to the truth, to find the way to my Son."
"And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" (Lk 1: 41-43)
"I am coming to confirm the truth to you. I desire to remind you of the words of my Son. He pronounced words of salvation for the entire world, the words of love for everyone - that love which He proved by His sacrifice."
"Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth. As thou didst send me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth." (Jn 17: 17-19)
"But even today, many of my children do not know Him, they do not want to come to know Him, they are indifferent. Because of their indifference my heart suffers painfully."

"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, `Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.' (Lk 15: 4-6)
"My Son has always been in the Father. By being born on earth He brought the divine and from me received the human. With Him the word came among us. With Him came the light of the world which penetrates hearts, illuminates them and fills them with love and consolation."
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (Jn 1: 1-5)
"My children, all those who love my Son can see Him, because His face can be seen through the souls which are filled with love for Him."
"The glory which thou hast given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and thou in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them even as thou hast loved me." (Jn 17: 22-23)

"Therefore, my children, my apostles, listen to me. Leave vanity and selfishness. Do not live only for what is earthly and material. Love my Son and make it so that others may see His face through your love for Him."
I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; (Rom 12; 1-2, 9-10)
"I will help you to come to know Him all the more. I will speak to you about Him. Thank you."
And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. (Lk 1: 47-49)

The most important is that we have Holy Spirit with us..

Priest from Poland: „Međugorje is a blessed place “

date: 27.02.2016.
Many pilgrims choose this quiet time to come to Medjugorje for more peaceful pilgrimage. So recently we had groups from France, England, Hungary, Korea, Italy, Spain, the United States and Poland. Fr. Krystian Strycharski was our guest at the radio Mir, and he has been a priest for 4 years and belongs to the parish of Divine Providence from Wilanow. He came now with a group of pilgrims, but it was 17 years ago when he came for the first time: “I came for New Year’s Eve, we spent those days in prayer and in praise and ever since then, I come here every year. The most important is that we have Holy Spirit with us, this is the place of peace and whenever I am here, I feel presence and protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. When I come here I try to deepen my relationship with Jesus. I climb Cross Mountain and I pray Way of the Cross, while every station touches me profoundly. Medjugorje is a blessed place, many hearts are opening here and people receive their vocations here. We priests can strengthen our faith here, especially by looking at so many pilgrims who are gift from God. We can really feel God’s mercy at work, so evident in confessions. People who are here with me refer to Medjugorje as to European Holy Land. Many of them witness that their lives were changed here. I usually pray one Rosary with my group, but while here, we pray three Rosaries a day and we are all trying to come to Jesus through Blessed Virgin Mary. I would like to invite you all to come to this holy place, to really get to know Jesus who will change your lives. We all need fullness of grace that Mary had in order for us to become persons who will bear fruits. That is why you should come here, take rosaries in your hands, take Holy Bible and you will have time for yourselves here. You will discover your mission, as this is indeed holy place.“

I feel as I am at home. It is coming to Mary’s home.

Fr. Ciril Čuš: „I decided to come to Međugorje each year“

date: 24.02.2016.
The leader of this year’s spiritual renewal held in Medjugorje parish from February 19-21, was Fr. Ciril Čuš, parish priest in two Slovenian parishes Žetale i Stoperce. He also spoke about his own experience of Medjugorje where he came for more than 40 times. The first time was in 1996, with one of his friends. „One night, when everyone was asleep, I went up Cross Mountain and I prayed to Jesus to help me. I then felt deep, inner peace that was coming from the inside. For a long while, I carried that peace within me and it accompanied me in all of the difficulties I was encountering. It was then I decided to come to Medjugorje each year and I love coming back here, as Mary is calling us. It is really beautiful to be here, I feel as I am at home. It is coming to Mary’s home. This time also, as soon as I arrived here, I went up Cross Mountain, to think better, to listen to what God wanted from me“, said Fr. Ciril, who has apostolate of spreading Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which is huge grace that his bishop also recognised: „Back in 1999, I began to pray Novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I began to do that every day, without anyone knowing about it. It was also my motto when I was newly ordained priest: „All yours Jesus, all yours Mary, until the end!“ So, one day after 10 years, my bishop called me and asked me if I wanted to spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary. I knew it was Lord’s plan for me and I agreed. Every day, surrender yourselves to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. God loves us so much, He cannot wait for us to come to Him, to open our human hearts and to become instruments in His hands. God accepts us just the way we are“, said Fr. Ciril.

Our Lady's Message to Marija of February 25, 2016

“Dear children! In this time of grace, I am calling all of you to conversion. Little children, you love little and pray even less. You are lost and do not know what your goal is. Take the cross, look at Jesus and follow Him. He gives Himself to you to the death on the cross, because He loves you. Little children, I am calling you: return to prayer with the heart so as to find hope and the meaning of your existence, in prayer. I am with you and am praying for you. Thank you for having responded to my call.”

At a recent event in Sacramento, California, there were the little wonders we so often encounter with a gathering of faithful -- testimonies that bolster that faith.
Faith is like a perpetual motion engine: a little belief causes a happening that leads to increased faith and to a larger wonder and if we keep at it -- if we maintain that faith, even when there is a dry season -- the miracles become all the larger and seem endless and self-propelled. We can ride that "motor" right into Heaven.
One wonder was in the way of the priests: At lunch with four of them, I asked how many had received their "calling" -- found their vocation -- at Medjugorje, which they had been discussing. Three of the four raised their hands. Not bad "fruit." You hear this around the country as well as the world.
Fr. Michael Lightner's BiographyOne of them, Father Michael Lightner, currently of Saint Margaret Mary Church in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, is a hulk of a man who at about 6'4" and 330 pounds had played center on full football scholarship for Eastern Michigan University and was invited to join training camp for the Cleveland Browns -- given a shot at being a pro. That's what he planned to do until, during a visit to Medjugorje (his mother, who organized pilgrimages, brought him on one of her trips), Lightner,  a tough guy who at times looks like he has a Harley parked out front, watched while a priest prayed over a disabled woman, trying to get her out of a wheelchair.
As he watched, Lightner heard a voice that intoned (this was an interior locution),"Michael, if I get her out of this wheelchair, will you enter the seminary?" That naturally took the young man aback. He'd never had any intention of becoming a priest! And he resisted the notion, at first mightily. But after wrangling back and forth with what he took to be the Lord -- and looking over to the poor wheelchair-bound woman -- he finally relented and answered that he would. "Within five minutes she was up out of the wheelchair and walking," recalls Lightner, who naturally was shocked at the sight, finding his vocation in this powerful, momentous fashion.
Remarkably, it was at Medjugorje, in the mid-1990s, that Father Lightner ran into another fellow from Wisconsin who likewise had no plans be a priest and found his calling there. This was Richard Wendell of Milwaukee, who back then sported long hair and a beard. They hit it off right away. Wendell, who is now at Holy Angels Parish in West Bend, was a home-builder and professional ski instructor who was engaged to be married and "never, ever, ever, ever" had considered a vocation. His fiance had even purchased her wedding gown; they had discussed names for their future offspring! But one night, at the apparition site (he too went there with his mother), Wendell had a dream that was not really a dream -- more a vision. As in near-death episodes, the sky seemed to open and on a lush, verdant landscape there was Jesus, Who said simply,"I want you to be a priest."
Like Lightner, Wendell was shocked. He told the Lord about his impending marriage. He argued that he was not fit to be a priest -- the "worst of sinners," a man who had been involved in drinking, drugs, sex, materialism, and in general the high life, a lifestyle that -- during hours in a confessional the day before (Medjugorje is famous for Confession), and a mystical "life review" -- he saw how he had hurt many people without realizing it (a "ripple effect" of wrong behavior) that even had led to some deaths. He saw how sin can move from one person to another, affecting an entire family. He was shown, to his shock, how violating a woman's virginity, as another example, "was worse than beating her."
Yet Jesus was calling him, and when Wendell persisted in arguing against becoming a priest, he said Jesus simply replied, "I know what I'm doing" and turned and walked away. When Wendell next ran into Michael Lightner, they both found themselves in tears. "You too?" he asked. They ended up best of friends, entering training for the priesthood together. They have been priests now for more than a decade. Father Lightner told me he hears about nine hours of Confession every week, for Confession also figured heavily into his experience. Only at Medjugorje.
There was also a woman, at the conference (organized by a dear old friend, Lynn Hoffman), named Arceli Liceralde of Gold River, California. She showed me a photo of a window in her house and explained:
"On February 14, 2013, my daughter received a dozen red roses. After a week, I did not want to throw the dead roses but I put them in my room. I can't remember the exact date, but one day the whole room was filled with overwhelming scent of roses. I felt peace and joy come upon me that I did not want the scent to go away. It was heavenly. I have experienced smelling this scent like coming from Heaven a few times, one when Vicka (one of the Medjugorje visionaries) was in Florida and the other during a procession in our church on one of the feast days of Our Lady. So I know in my heart that it was our Blessed Mother's presence. I started praising and thanking God."
"On March 3, 2013, I went to check the backyard and I saw an image on our kitchen window which looked like the Blessed Mother. I took a snapshot and made it as a screensaver on my office computer. Some of my co-workers who saw it told me that they see Mary carrying baby Jesus. My co-workers kept asking me if the image was still there because I thought it was dust and somebody drew the image. I called Mike, who is a photographer and member of our prayer group, to take pictures. After doing so, I asked him why it was still there. We were both surprised because Mike said it is notoutside but it is between the dual-pane window.
"When I first saw it, there were no colors. Now, you can see colors like pinks, blues, greens and gold that look like glitters when the sun is shining brightly between 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Through the powerful intercession of Our Lady, I cannot mention all the answered prayers ever since she appeared like immigration problems, a couple blessed with children who had lost hope, people with cancer, aneurysm, and brain tumors who got healed or on their way to recovery. On March 5, we are celebrating her third anniversary. We will honor her by doing the 2,000 Hail Marys. This is done by praying 100 Hail Marys for every prayer intention which usually takes ten to twelve hours." (I'll pray too, since this happens to be my birthday.)
Finally, a gentle, humble, and devout Catholic named Anslim Soares, originally from India, now in Sacramento, who picked me up at the airport and gave me a picture card of Mary and a Host explaining that on Monday, November 11, 2013, the following happened:
"I arrived at the church early that morning to set up for Holy Mass. When I opened the sacristy door, I noticed a broken Host lying on the floor. I thought it might be consecrated, so I carefully picked up the Host and placed it in a purificator. As soon as the priest arrived, I asked him what to do. He instructed me to take the Host home and place it in a glass of water, and when it dissolved. to pour it under a rose bush."
"I did as I was told and placed the water-filled glass with the Host behind the large statue of Our Lady that I keep on our fireplace mantle. Six days later, on Sunday morning, November 17, 2013, after returning home from the Holy Mass, I checked the Host behind the statue of the Blessed Virgin. On the surface of the water were two pieces of the Host, each about 1/4 to 1/2-inch in diameter, which had very distinctly turned blood red. It was very plain to see. I asked my daughter to take a picture." Just fungus? Such was found to be the case in a similar, recent event in Minnesota. Bacteria?
"I took the picture and the glass with its contents to the priest. He told me very matter-of-factly that it was a Eucharistic miracle. He said that whether or not of of nature's laws were broken, it was still a miraculous sign of the Real Presence of the Most Precious Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. He said that the miracle was a loving mother's gift from the Virgin Mary when the Host was placed behind her statue. He quoted St. Thomas Aquinas: 'For those with faith, no evidence is necessary; for those without it, no evidence will suffice.'
"May God be praised!" wrote Anslim about it, on the card. "After twenty-three days, on December 3, 2013, the Host was finally dissolved. What remained of the water was poured into the earth."

Save the Shrine v 2

Wrecking Ball Poised
HELP #SAVETHESHRINE

A beloved landmark 1923 Catholic church in a distressed neighborhood next to the University of Chicago has been slated for the wrecking ball.
After a devastating fire destroyed the new roof of the Shrine of Christ the King in October 2015, a broad 'Coalition to Save the Shrine' --  parishioners, preservationists and neighborhood people together -- raised enough money (more than $600K) to stabilize this church, where the Institute of Christ the King offers the traditional Latin Mass every day.
But the Archdiocese has just received approval for their demolition order, "without delay."
Time is of the essence.

The Future

Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Today I call you to prayer. The one who prays is not afraid of the future. Little children do not forget, I am with you and I love you all. Thank you for having responded to my call." (June 25, 2000) Medjugorje Message

The second entry in St. Faustina's Diary I-- this little prayer/poem. It has given me great peace and so I share it with all of you.   Jesus, I trust in You!

O My God

When I look into the future, I am frightened,
But why plunge into the future?
Only the present moment is precious to me,
As the future may never enter my soul at all.

It is no longer in my power,
To change, correct or add to the past;
For neither sages nor prophets could do that.
And so, what the past has embraced I must entrust to God.
O present moment, you belong to me, whole and entire,
I desire to use you as best I can.

And although I am weak and small,
You grant me the grace of Your omnipotence.
And so, trusting in Your mercy,
I walk through life like a little child,
Offering You each day this heart
Burning with love for Your greater glory. (Diary 2)

Holy Mass for murdered Franciscans and parishioners celebrated in Medjugorje

date: 11.02.2016.
Holy Mass for Franciscans and parishioners murdered at the end of the World War II, was celebrated on Wednesday, February 10, on the feast of Bl. Alojzije Stepinac in Medjugorje parish church of St. James. Graves of so many victims are still unknown, but the faithful are still remembering them. Fr. Mario Ostojic along with 8 priests concelebrating, was the main celebrant of the evening Holy Mass at 6 pm. He said in the beginning: „Today we are remembering Bl. Alojzije Stepinac, Croatian cardinal who was sentenced by communists for 16 years of prison. Our Herzegovina was full of victims too, especially in the World War II. Today we are remembering those killed in this parish. There is hardly a single family who did not morn for someone during that war. Some were never able to discover graves of their loved ones, to bury them with dignity. Many do not have graves at all. Tonight we especially pray for murdered Franciscans from this parish.” Fr. Mario spoke about the Lent and about sacrifice of the murdered priests: „66 Franciscans from our parish laid their lives because they believed in the one who sees, the one who is righteous and who will reward their sacrifices. Their sacrifice brought many fruits. The Province filled with the blood of innocent martyrs, blossomed with new offspring, with lives, justice and fervour. There is nothing as bad as to watch our homes filled with ashes, lives filled with blood. It was something that brought new meaning to lives and values as we could see all we had was worthless. That is what Lent is doing, it brings us back to true values and the ashes does not represent the end. No, our life is not going to end up in nothingness. Ashes is here to remind us, to cleanse us, to make our gaze brighter, so we would be able to see the light in the end, to see Jesus and Easter”.

God Wants To Save You

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- God doesn't want to condemn anyone; he wants to save every person in the entire world, Pope Francis said.

"The problem is letting him enter one's heart" to transform one's life, the pope said during his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square Feb. 3.
"This is the heart of God, the heart of a father who loves his children and wants them to live rightly and justly and, therefore, to live in fullness and be happy," he said.
The pope continued a series of talks dedicated to divine mercy, looking specifically at how divine mercy and divine justice go hand in hand.
"It might seem that they are two things that contradict each other," he said, but they don't because "it is precisely God's mercy that brings true justice to fruition."
God's justice is different from the human administration of legal justice, which is "retributive, that imposes a penalty on the guilty," the pope said.
"This path still does not lead to true justice because it doesn't actually conquer evil but simply contains it," the pope said. "Rather, it is only by responding to (evil) with the good that evil truly can be overcome."
The Bible shows that true justice bypasses a court system, he said. The one who is wronged goes directly to the one who is guilty "in order to invite him to conversion, to help him to understand that he is doing wrong, to appeal to his conscience."
Through this act of persuasion, the one guilty of wrongdoing "can open himself to the forgiveness that the injured party is offering him. And this is beautiful," the pope said.
This is the way that families try to work out their conflicts, he said. The one who has been offended "loves the culprit and wants to salvage the relationship that binds them, not cut off this relationship," he said.
But it is not an easy path to take, he added. "It requires that the person who was wronged be ready to forgive and desire the salvation of and what's best for the one who has wronged him."
These reciprocal acts of forgiveness and conversion are the only way true justice can triumph, the pope said, because "if the guilty one recognizes the evil committed and stops doing it, then the evil is no more and the one who was unjust becomes just."
"This is how God acts with us sinners," he said. God constantly offers forgiveness and helps people recognize their sin in order to set them free.
That is because "God doesn't seek our condemnation, but our salvation. God doesn't want to condemn anybody," not even those whom many think deserve it like Pontius Pilate or Judas, he said. "The Lord of mercy wants to save everybody."
God's immense heart "goes beyond our small concept of justice" and opens up people's horizons to his limitless mercy, he said.
This is the kind of paternal heart people want to encounter in the confessional, the pope said.
While the priest may seek to help the penitent understand the evil committed, "we all go to the confessional to find a father, a father who helps us change our life, a father who gives us the strength to go on, a father who forgives us in the name of God."
That is why the sacrament of penance or reconciliation is such a big responsibility for the priest, the pope said, because the people "who come to you are just looking for a father" and the priest in the confessional is there "in the place of the father who brings justice with his mercy."

Medjugorje - Our Lady's Apparition to Mirjana

Our Lady's message given through Mirjana of February 2, 2016

"Dear children, I have called you and am calling you anew to come to know my Son, to come to know the truth. I am with you and am praying for you to succeed. My children, you must pray much in order to have all the more love and patience; to know how to endure sacrifice and to be poor in spirit. Through the Holy Spirit, my Son is always with you. His Church is born in every heart that comes to know Him. Pray that you can come to know my Son; pray that your soul may be one with Him. That is the prayer and the love which draws others and makes you my apostles. I am looking at you with love, with a motherly love. I know you; I know your pain and sorrows, because I also suffered in silence. My faith gave me love and hope. I repeat, the Resurrection of my Son and my Assumption into Heaven is hope and love for you. Therefore, my children, pray to come to know the truth; to have firm faith which will lead your heart and which will transform your pain and sufferings into love and hope. Thank you. "
