The Promise of new Life in the Holy Spirit

The Lord and Giver of Life:

The Holy Spirit in John’s Gospel,

Acts, Romans and I Corinthians

Ineffably young, undaunted, eternally optimistic, with sublime finesse and outrageously dry humor. These are just a few of the adjectives that come to mind when I reflect upon the personality of the Holy Spirit as I have known Him. The Church worships Him as the Lord and Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who together with the Father and Son is worshipped and glorified.

The Promise of New Life: John's Gospel

In the first chapter of John's Gospel, John the Baptist prophesies the coming of the One whose sandal he is not worthy to untie, claiming that he, John, only baptizes with water. (Jn.1:26—27). The following day as Jesus approaches him, he announces "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (Jn 1:29) and witnesses that “He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is He who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’”

There is a lot here. We have prophecy and its fulfillment, We have God speaking to a man, (a component of prophecy), we have a the ophany, (the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove), and we have a distinction between a baptism of repentance (a cleansing), in water as performed by John (baptize coming from the Greek baptizein meaning to dip) and a mysterious baptism to be performed by Jesus: “This is He who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.”

In that part of the world where Jesus dwelt, water means life. On the third day after His baptism, we see Jesus, on the occasion of a wedding changing water into wine; very fine wine and in great quantities. Life, as it were, into superabundant superlife in connection with a marriage. (Jn. 2). In Chapter 3, We find Jesus speaking to an old man about being born anew of water and the Spirit, without which he cannot enter the Kingdom of God, and that “That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit.” John the Baptist in Jn. 3: 29 proclaims Jesus to be the Bridegroom; then, in Jn. 4:10 Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman about living water which never runs out; a spring within a person welling up into eternal life, the source of which is the Holy Spirit.

So, water is life, but Jesus offers a Living Water, a more alive life, a life transformed as water into wine through a supernatural marriage. Jesus dips us into the Lord and Giver of Life, thus baptizing us in the Holy Spirit, and we emerge born anew of the Spirit into Zöe, or, Supernatural life, the Life of God, Life in the Spirit, or The Kingdom of God which is at hand, and within us. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh (Bios) and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. (Zöe).” We are reborn by water, (repentance) and given new supernatural life in the Spirit through this supernatural marriage (belief). “He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.’ Now this He said about the Spirit, which those who believed in Him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” (Jn. 7:38—39)

Jesus had not yet been glorified.... Hmm... That means it had only begun. It was on the third day after his baptism that Jesus transformed the water into wine at the wedding feast. But in Luke's Gospel (Lk. 12:50) Jesus proclaims, “I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished!” Jesus had to face a baptism of suffering. He had yet to collect all the pain, dirt, sin, evil, sickness and death into himself by His suffering and death, thus paying our ransom from the captivity of sin and the princedom of Satan. To the Jewish people blood also meant life, as well as expiation, and the world needed to be washed in the shed blood of Christ before it could receive the rushing, cleansing, renewing, Life giving Waters of the Holy Spirit.

In one of the most astonishing remarks in all of Scripture Jesus tells His friends, what it will mean when that river of Life flows: “Truly, truly I say unto you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father.” (Jn. 14:12). A priest friend of mine, a Catholic evangelist, once said, “If we took that word seriously they'd be putting us in jail!” (The earliest apostles took it seriously as we shall see when we look at Acts.)

Jesus makes this claim knowing that the same power that would raise Him from the dead would be dwelling in us, the Very Life of God, the Holy Spirit which enables us, like Jesus, to do the things we see the Father doing. (cf. Jn: 5:19) and the ability, through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, to see and discern those things (I Cor. 12: 8—12). He goes on to comfort his frightened disciples, for whom these promises lie mysteriously in the future, that He will pray that the Father will send “Another Counselor,” an advocate, a defense attorney; “The Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him or knows Him...” (Jn 14:16—17), for the rough times ahead. The promise of Jesus, that we will do greater things than He has done stands to reason.

True Christian life is by definition a supernatural life empowered by the Holy Spirit, and where the Holy Spirit is, supernatural things happen. Jesus says: “I will love him and manifest myself to him,” (Jn. 14: 20b). Christ is alive and manifest to us, and through Him, the Father. How Jesus wants them (and us) to hear this message! In His final discourse He repeats it four times! (Jn. 14: 16—17, 26, 15:26, 16: 7—8, 13—15). After His Baptism of suffering, wherein we all died with Him and rose to New Life, Jesus came to His Friends and Breathed the Breath of this New Life into them saying "receive the Holy Spirit" and sent them (and us) forth as He was sent forth by the Father; to do greater things than He has done.

The New Life in Action: The Acts Of Apostles:

I could go on forever about the Acts of the Apostles, but shall endeavor to keep my remarks brief. I am of the opinion that the wild fantastic adventure story that has come down to us, known as The Acts of the Apostles, was not meant to be closed with the words “The End,” but rather with the invitation, “To be Continued...” Indeed, in the very first verse Luke tells his friend Theophilus that in his first book he dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day He was taken up, after he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen.

Later, on the road to Damascus, Jesus asks Saul of Tarsus, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?” when Saul had never laid eyes on Jesus in the flesh. It follows that Jesus Himself is present in the body of believers continuing the work He began before He was taken up. There He is in the believers healing the sick, raising the dead, casting out demons and preaching the Word of God in Power.

Christianity was never meant to be a wishy-washy dead religion afraid of offending people with the Spirit of Truth which convinces the world about sin (See Jn. 16:8). They were put in jail, and ultimately murdered as Jesus was. Love that tells the Truth was and is too radical for this world, but then Jesus promised his friends that the world would hate them as it hated Him, but to take courage, that He has overcome the world.

On the lighter side, there is hardly a charismatic who doesn't occasionally collapse with laughter from the shock of recognition while reading this book. For example, the story of Phillip and the eunuch always cracks me up, because I have found myself in situations like that with similar results. I must confess that I haven't experienced that “Holy Spirit transporter beam” that was Phillip's means of transportation to and from this mission, but I fully expect to see that sort of thing in my lifetime. The times we live are as dire, if not more so, as apostolic times; since the Gospel needs not only to be spread, but in many cases, restored to its fullness.

This is why, I believe, God has poured out the Holy Spirit in a new Pentecost on the Church and world in this latter part of the twentieth century. This manifestation of Pentecost in our age has resulted in what is known as the charismatic renewal. The charismatic renewal is, undeniably, the only movement in the Church today that is completely God-made. It is not the result of an idea of an inspired man. No human being could have thought up the charismatic renewal, much less brought it about. Pope John XXIII prayed precisely for this when he convoked Vatican II. (Actually, it is the same Pentecost, in a new a re-manifestation—I do not believe it was ever God's will that the original peter out.)

Our world that has in many ways returned to paganism, and in many areas has become too “sophisticated” for the concept of sin, and is even inventing its own theology to support itself. The Joy of Pentecost is to see with your own eyes people being set free from their old lives into this New Life promised by Jesus in the Power of the Holy Spirit. To see people set free for good from the misery that accompanies, for instance, a homosexual lifestyle—and not only the misery, but the lifestyle itself, as they joyfully and willingly put off the “old man” and put on New Life in Christ, Who offers something better.

I have seen a woman completely set free in an instant from her anguish over an abortion, long since confessed, but still haunting her, aggravated by a compulsive bondage to promiscuity. I have seen people overcome with tears of joy and relief at the recognition of their sins and the simultaneous freedom from them in Christ.

My friend, Fr. Joe Laughlin, SJ, said publicly that since receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and coming into the charismatic renewal, that when ministering to people, he can accomplish through the gifts of the Holy Spirit in three hours what it used to take three months of psychological counseling to accomplish. 

What is most heartbreaking is, in my opinion, the culpable ignorance of this phenomenon, if not outright hardhearted and stiff-necked rejection of it by so many in the Church in our age. Especially priests. It is written off as “emotionalism”—which is certainly not true—the slightest open-minded or open-hearted look would reveal something much more profound going on, which has an emotional aspect. Remember St. Peter: “These men are not drunk!” (Acts 2: 15).

An even worse caricature than emotionalism—and just as inaccurate—is “fundamentalism.” This often comes from modern “sophisticated” theologians seeking new and creative ways to win the favor of the world with new and creative forms of nominalism, because their careers are too deeply invested in their de-mythology, which is threatened by the supernatural manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the little uneducated People of God—to put it bluntly.

In 1973 our late beloved Archbishop, Cardinal Mederios, sent a letter to the priests of the Archdiocese calling on them to aid, encourage and pastor charismatic renewal. To this day, thirteen years later, many priests still regard charismatics as if they had the plague—unless, of course, some messy menial task needs to be done around the parish that no one else wants to do. The charismatics are usually the ones willing and honored to serve in any way they can. 

Fr. John Randall, of Providence, Rhode Island, a pastor and Doctor of Sacred Theology and one of the first leaders of the charismatic renewal, tells of his experience of the baptism of the Holy Spirit (the expression, used in this sense, to mean the prayer or experience which results in the release of the Gift of the power of the Holy Spirit, first bestowed at baptism and confirmation but largely untapped until released in this way in a personal intimate experience of God's power—usually accompanied by the release of the gift of tongues, and other extraordinary charisms promised by Jesus.) When asked if he wanted to receive this baptism of the Holy Spirit, he said, “I don't know what it is, but if there's a way to have ‘more God’ I want it!” I can only guess that the main reason other Christians, including priests, don't share Fr. Randall's openness and enthusiasm is the natural human resistance to conversion. “What will the Lord ask of me?” All Christians know this terrifying feeling, but also know that once broken through, their fears were groundless and the blessings fantastic and well worth the risk.

One of the first manifestations of the baptism of the Holy Spirit is the convincing, or, as it is more popularly called, the conviction of sin, by the Holy Spirit, who convicts but never condemns. So many times I have heard people exclaim, “Oh my God, I always thought of that thing in my life that I held onto as a little thing! Oh, Lord forgive me! Help me, Lord, for I can't be free on my own power!” Invariably there is a complete absence of negative guilt at these times, rather it is more of a swooning to God's ravishment and Love that makes anything that is not of God seem completely abhorrent.

It is a sense of liberation from bonds to things that weigh us down. What follows is a loving and intense desire to be obedient, to God and to the Church (“If you love me you will keep my commandments.” [Jn. 14:15]—as opposed to “If you love me you'd better keep my commandments!”) Hearing talk about the modern "permissibility of sin in certain circumstances," is sometimes an almost unbearably grievous experience, accompanied by the thought, “Oh, if they only knew!” It is also amazing how often people report that sinful habits that have bound them and frustrated them for years just plain disappear in this experience.

Anyway, in modern dissenting theology, toleration has shifted from acceptance of the sinner (which Jesus always practiced) to toleration of sin as a way of accepting the sinner (which Jesus never practiced). It seeks to reinterpret the Gospel in terms of human limitation rather than the power of God, which is evidently so foreign to its proponents. It is a strange contortion of legalism, that, from all appearances, seeks not only to throw out the Law which brings death, but also the Spirit Who brings Life by the very act of convincing of sin . How can we accept a savior if we don't know we need one, or what we need to be saved from? The world is dying of sin, and needs to be reconvinced.

The Holy Spirit of Truth is also the Spirit of Love, and to be convinced of one's sin(s) by Him is an experience of fantastic joy, albeit painful at times. It is the birth pangs of ever Newer Life as we allow the Spirit to cleanse us in an ongoing baptism of repentance, and ever deepening conversion Into the Supernatural Life of God.

As the Holy Father says on this point, “Conversion requires convincing of sin; ...” (Dominum et vivificantem, Pope John Paul II, 1986; p55, DSP Pub. emphasis his.) The world that Jesus promised would hate us is hostile to this point and rejects the humility of Truth which acknowledges how we stand before God. “...The Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds be exposed. But he who does what is true comes to the light that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God.” (Jn. 3: 19b—21) Also, “...the Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.” (1 Jn. 1: 7b—10).

So why am I dwelling on sin in a happy paper about the Holy Spirit? What a dreary, judgemental, self-righteous and preachy fellow I must be! Why, you ask? Because it is the Good News! I get upset with modern theologians who try to downplay sin, because it robs us of the True Joy of repentance and deeper conversion. Besides, unchecked sin does harm to our life whether we're culpable or not. Shepherds, if you love your sheep, tell them in the Holy Spirit the Good News about sin! (Do you not know that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? (Rom. 2:4b).

Acts1:8a says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” There is no power shortage in the Church. Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday today and forever. Jesus promises us, “These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick and they will recover” (Mk 16:17—18).

To be charismatic does not mean to part of another fringe movement in the Church. It means to appropriate our inheritance as adopted sons and daughters of the Father through Jesus—the baptism of the Holy Spirit—the rivers of living water—New Life—In which we do greater things than Jesus has done because He goes to the Father for us. It is our New-Birthright, it is what Jesus expects of us, it is the original Ortho/doxy (True/Glory) ...it is normal Catholic Christianity. Lord, we believe, help our unbelief.

The New Life Explained: Romans:

I take back any implied apology for focusing on sin so much in a paper on the Holy Spirit because as I look at the references to the Holy Spirit Paul makes in Romans, I see that he does the same thing. (cf. Rom. 8, 11:32, 13:12,14,)

The New Life Pastored: I Corinthians:

I Corinthians is bound to bring a weary smile to any mature charismatic with pastoral responsibility or experience. It is like being in a leaky boat; every time you think you've plugged a leak two more seem to spring up. Poor Paul. That's how it is with the Corinthians. Back to basics, break out the milk. Abuses in the liturgy, abuses with the spiritual gifts. Things have not changed all that much. I wonder how he feels looking down from Heaven at current day charismatic communities and seeing the same problems almost two thousand years later? Love is patient, Love is kind, Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Poor Paul. Poor Jesus. Poor us. Blessed are the poor. Come Holy Spirit! Come Lord Jesus!

Praising and thanking God

Let us continually offer God a sacrifice of praise. (Hebrews 13:15)

On February 28, 1944, a young Dutch woman named Corrie ten Boom and her family were arrested and sent to concentration camps for running a safe house for Jews during the Nazi occupation of Holland. In the midst of great suffering, Corrie’s sister, Betsie, reminded her that the Scriptures called them to thank God in everything. So they did. They even thanked God for the infestation of fleas in the barracks. As they persisted in giving thanks, they noticed that the guards left them alone. They were able to hold Bible studies and led many fellow prisoners to Christ. They later found out that the guards stayed away because of the fleas!

On one level, this story shows that God works through all things. But on another level, it shows how praising the Lord does something deeper in us. It helps us focus on the Lord so that we can experience his life and freedom more deeply. As Corrie and Betsie praised God, they paid less attention to their hardships and more attention to the other prisoners and their need for Jesus.

Praising God helps us find that place of “restful waters” that refresh and restore us (Psalm 23:2). As we offer God our praise and thanks, we become more aware of his greatness. As a result, difficulties no longer loom as large. Recalling God’s greatness opens us up to his wisdom and direction. It helps us to receive his love, which casts out all fear. It fills us with courage and peace.

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus told the disciples to “come away … and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). Praising and thanking God is one way we can do just that. We don’t need to be behind closed doors to do it! We can praise him sitting in the car, on an elevator, or in the middle of a lunch break. Even while talking to a neighbor, we can lift our hearts to Jesus and thank him for who he is and what he has done for us. As Corrie and Betsie ten Boom discovered, the more we praise God, the more he sustains us—no matter how many “fleas” we see!

“Father, you are both mighty and humble. Thank you for your love and mercy. I praise you for holding me in the palm of your hand.”

A few days earlier, on 1/26/2012, the Lord had told us:

The time is near, quickly approaching. Are you responding fully, My little ones? Are you ready, for the great and terrible day is upon you? You are My people. I have been forming you for the battle that draws near. Are you ready My family? Heaven watches with anticipation for soon the eyes of many will contemplate My glorious Cross upon the sky. Raise up My hidden martyrs of love for the decisive battle that draws near. Call forth My victims of love, for it is they that are the passage for the Queen of Heaven to usher in the new Pentecost for the world..

“Dear children! I am here, I am among you. I am looking at you, am smiling at you and I love you in the way that only a mother can. Through the Holy Spirit who comes through my purity, I see your hearts and I offer them to my Son. Already for a long time I have been asking of you to be my apostles, to pray for those who have not come to know God’s love. I am asking for prayer said out of love, prayer which carries out works and sacrifices. Do not waste time thinking about whether you are worthy to be my apostles. Model of a “Pure Heart”

     On November 15, 2014, MaryTv.tv streamed an Evening of Prayer for Peace with visionary Ivan Dragicevic and Cardinal Cristoph Schoenborn at St. Stephen Cathedral in Vienna. One of the witnesses to give testimony was 23 year-old Ania Goledzinowska, a former model and actress in Italian sitcoms.      Ania began her story by saying she was born into a poor family in Poland. Her father was an alcoholic. When she was 10 years old, her father died, and her mother began bringing many men into their home. One of them abused Ania, and when Ania told her mother, her mother did not believe her. This added to Ania’s sadness of missing her father. She soon left her home and her school, and ended up on the streets. But she was not happy on the streets. “When I was 13, I wanted to kill myself,” she said. 
     When she was 16, Ania left Poland for Italy “to find happiness.” She had been promised work as a model, even though she was not old enough. They took her passport and other documents, and wanted her to work as a prostitute. Fortunately, Ania managed to escape, but she didn’t go back to Poland. 
     Ania eventually began to work as a model on TV in Italy and for agencies. She began to live the life she used to dream about, but she was not happy. “I hated everybody. I hated Poland. I hated my family,” she testified. 
     One day, a friend invited Ania to go to Medjugorje. She had heard about Medjugorje prior to this invitation, and despite the fact that she did not believe in it, she agreed to go there. While she was there, Ania was present for Mirjana’s 2nd of the month apparition, and she climbed Apparition Hill. “I stayed there and didn’t see anything there or sense anything. I thought it was all a big lie; it was all about money, people wanted to make money.” Her friend replied, “Ania, you do not understand it, but your heart has changed.”

     As Ania and her friend were about to climb Cross Mountain, her friend said to her, “Ania, think about Jesus. Think about Calvary.” Ania retorted, “I have my own problems, so why should I think about Jesus and His problems?” Despite her feelings, she went anyway. When they reached the Third Station, Ania said, “I’m not going any farther from this point.” And then she heard a voice. Ania described the voice as “not a special voice – it’s a voice that is speaking to each one of us when we were born, but in today’s life, we don’t hear that voice anymore.” The voice said, “Ania, if you don’t climb, you won’t understand the reason why you are here.” Ania felt a great peace. Then she looked at all the old ladies climbing the hill, and realized that if they could make it, then she could, too. When she reached the top and saw the white cross, she knelt down and began to pray. “It wasn’t me who was praying, because since I was five, I didn’t know how to pray. It was a voice that came out of me. And a voice said to me, ‘Ania, you must forgive.’ Only two words came out of my mouth, ‘Forgive me.’ Two simple words, but very hard to say, very hard to pronounce. When I did it, my heart became so light.” 
     When Ania returned to Italy, she began to change her life. After two years, she went back to Medjugorje to live in a Marian community with nuns. Her old friends asked her, “What are you doing?” Ania answered, “I’m doing nothing. I’m happy. I’m praying, I’m eating chicken and potatoes. And I’m very happy with it. The life in Medjugorje has changed me completely.” They replied, “You’re crazy!” Ania said that what she had found there could not be bought with money, but her friends did not understand. 
     Ania said, “I want to tell you that money cannot buy happiness in your life. I have worked with big famous Hollywood people like Leonardo DiCaprio, but many of them – many of us – would look at our homes and look in the mirror and we would understand that we are not happy, because what I want – and what each one of you want – is to be loved, to be really loved. And who is the one who can give love to each one of us? That is Jesus.” 
     Ania affirmed, “The most important thing is to love and to forgive.” She said that after many years of not seeing each other, she finally met with her mother and they hugged. They became mother and daughter again. Ania now understood that she could not blame her mother for her actions, because as a child, her mother had not gotten enough love from her own parents, so she did not know how to give love herself. 
     Ania said that whenever she gives her testimony, she always recommends that each person there should call at least one person that he or she has not been talking to and ask for forgiveness. “Although those people hurt you, don’t carry it with you. It’s not important, because when you forgive, you don’t forgive for him or her – you’ll be forgiving for yourself. And that said, you can open your hearts and take your heart with all bad feelings and all bad thoughts THAT ARE NOT ALLOWING GOD TO WORK WITHIN YOUR HEART. MANY TIMES WE ASK GOD FOR MERCY, BUT IF OUR HEART IS FULL OF ANGER AND RAGE, THEN THERE IS NO PLACE FOR GOD. There is no road that can heal us before we forgive, and there is no way that will take us to Paradise, to Heaven, unless we forgive.”

     Ania related that the first thing the nuns wanted her to do when she went to live with them was to clean the bathroom. Ania snapped, “I’m not doing the bathroom!” The nun said to her, “Oh yeah? Is that so? Then from today you will clean all the bathrooms of the community.” Ania acknowledged, “And since then, I have cleaned many bathrooms, but I did it with a big smile on my face, because every suffering that we are giving to God, offering to God, is one step on the way to Heaven. Many times when I was cleaning those bathrooms, it came to me as if I was cleaning my soul – all the sin that collected in my soul for all those years.” 
     “My life has changed. I was Mary Magdalene before she became holy. In Medjugorje, I have changed and I started to live in chastity.” A fruit of her conversion is an association Ania created – called “Pure Hearts” – for those who have chosen to live in chastity until marriage, respecting God and themselves. As a sign of recognition, there are rings for all members. With that ring, members go to a priest and take a vow to live in chastity until marriage. Ania was told that she would never be able to find even 50 people to do this, but now there are more than 7,000! Ania said, “Today that army of Satan is very big and he, with his passion to make us feel like we’re in love, but that’s not the truth.” She continued, “Let us try to live how Jesus is telling us to live, totally in chastity. And when he or she [your boyfriend/girlfriend] says, no [to chastity], and he or she leaves you…that means that they are only with you because they want only your body.” Ania encouraged everyone to seek “true love” because everyone has a need to be “loved truly.” She concluded, “And the true love that is above all is Jesus.” 
     Ania is certainly a “model” of a “pure heart.”

"Dear children! I am here, I am among you. I am looking at you, am smiling at you and I love you in the way that only a mother can. Through the Holy Spirit who comes through my purity, I see your hearts and I offer them to my Son. Already for a long time I have been asking of  you to be my apostles, to pray for

those who have not come to know God's love. I am asking for prayer said out of love, prayer which carries out works and sacrifices. Do not waste time thinking about whether you are worthy to be my apostles. The Heavenly Father will judge everyone; and you, love Him and listen to Him. Dear Family of Mary!

"Dear children! Also today I call you: live your vocation in prayer. Now, as never before, Satan wants to suffocate man and his soul by his contagious wind of hatred and unrest. In many hearts there is no joy because there is no God or prayer. Hatred and war are growing from day to day. I am calling you, little children, begin anew, with enthusiasm, the walk of holiness and love; since I have come among you because of this. Together let us be love and forgiveness for all those who know and want to love only with a human love and not with that immeasurable love of God to which God calls you. Little children, may hope in a better tomorrow always be in your heart. Thank you for having responded to my call." (January 25, 2015)

"Now, as never before, Satan wants to suffocate man and his soul by his contagious wind of hatred and unrest."

There is an urgency in Our Lady's message. We can all feel it. Maybe it is her use of the phrase, "Now, as never before..." Mother Mary has a privileged perspective on history. She has witnessed the past 2000 years. She has seen centuries of turmoil, strife, persecution, and war. She has seen the growth of the Church, steadily over time, no matter the opposition. She has seen the Holy Spirit prevail over evil, time and time again. And she has seen the enemy laying his snares, gathering his forces, and warring upon the Church in every age. And so when she says, "Now as never before...", it seems that we ought to take her seriously.

I thought it might be helpful to look at the messages in which she has used this phrase. There are only three others. I list them below, so that we can read them and pray over them. It seems that there is a great deal at stake in this time of Our Lady's coming to Medjugorje. She has come at a pivotal moment in history, and though we might not see the whole picture, we can feel that she is with us because we need her and there is so much that depends on our response to her coming.

Here are the messages:

August 25, 1991 "Dear Children! Today also I invite you to prayer, now as never before when my plan has begun to be realized. Satan is strong and wants to sweep away my plans of peace and joy and make you think that my Son is not strong in His decisions. Therefore, I call all of you, dear children, to pray and fast still more firmly. I invite you to self-renunciation for nine days so that, with your help, everything that I desire to realize through the secrets I began in Fatima, may be fulfilled. I call you, dear children, to now grasp the importance of my coming and the seriousness of the situation. I want to save all souls and present them to God. Therefore, let us pray that everything I have begun be fully realized. Thank you for having responded to my call."

Our Lady really connected the dots with this message. She is in Medjugorje to finish up what she began in Fatima. Fatima was the beginning of her triumph. This is the time of its fulfilment. Wow!

September 25, 1991 "Dear children! Today in a special way I invite you all to prayer and renunciation. For now as never before Satan wants to show the world his shameful face by which he wants to seduce as many people as possible onto the way of death and sin. Therefore, dear children, help my Immaculate Heart to triumph in the sinful world. I beseech all of you to offer prayers and sacrifices for my intentions so I can present them to God for what is most necessary. Forget your desires, dear children, and pray for what God desires, and not for what you desire. Thank you for having responded to my call."

The shameful face of Satan is completely visible to us now. Who can deny that he is revealing himself? The only response we can give is to forget our desires, and pray for what God desires...the Triumph of the Immaculate Heart.

March 25, 1992 "Dear children! Today as never before I invite you to live my messages and to put them into practice in your life. I have come to you to help you and, therefore, I invite you to change your life because you have taken a path of misery, a path of ruin. When I told you: convert, pray, fast, be reconciled, you took these messages superficially. You started to live them and then you stopped, because it was difficult for you. No, dear children, when something is good, you have to persevere in the good and not think: God does not see me, He is not listening, He is not helping. And so you have gone away from God and from me because of your miserable interest. I wanted to create of you an oasis of peace, love and goodness. God wanted you, with your love and with His help, to do miracles and, thus, give an example. Therefore, here is what I say to you: Satan is playing with you and with your souls and I cannot help you because you are far away from my heart. Therefore, pray, live my messages and then you will see the miracles of God's love in your everyday life. Thank you for having responded to my call."

This message is a warning to us, we must not let Satan play with us. We must move into God's camp and stay there. We must help create the oasis of peace that Our Lady came to create. That oasis is her Immaculate Heart, revealed in each of us.

Well, I didn't expect to write this. It just came to me that Our Lady is urgent. And she has been urgent before. These messages together give us some sense of what is needed from us. May we respond to her call! May we become part of her peace plan, her oasis of peace! May we see miracles of God's love in our lives!! May Our Lady's desire to save all souls and present them to God be realized!!

FAMILY TRANSPLANT

"Whoever does the will of God is brother and sister and mother to me." -Mark 3:35

Jesus said that He came for division, to divide a family three against two (Lk 12:52). He meant that some family members would receive Him while others would reject Him, at least for a time. For those who love Jesus, love their families, and yet have been rejected within their families because of their love for Jesus, there is great pain.

Yet Jesus offers the greatest consolation amidst this pain: by doing the will of God, we are adopted and transplanted into the family of God (Mk 3:35). We become a brother or sister of Jesus, a son or daughter of God the Father, united in love through the Holy Spirit. Praise be to the Holy Trinity forever! Our family meal is now the Mass, as we gather with the rest of our family at the table of the Lord and receive the Holy Eucharist.

In the meantime, continue to love your biological family and pray for them. Your love and prayers may not seem to be having any impact. It might even seem to you that your love and prayers are making the situation worse. Keep persevering anyway. Day by day, the Lord is working behind the scenes (Mk 4:26ff) to unite your family in Him. Jesus is the stumbling Stone that smashes a family apart (Mt 21:44) and the Cornerstone upon Which the family is restored (Mt 21:42; Ps 118:22).

"I have come to do Your will, O God" (Heb 10:7).

 "By this 'will,' we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." -Heb 10:10

FR. MICHAEL SCANLON PROPHECY, 1/13/80

I recently came across this prophecy given by Father Scanlon at the height of the Charismatic Renewal, 1980, and thought it apropos  for this time.

The Lord God says “Hear my Word.”  The time that has been marked by my blessings and gifts is being replaced now by a period to be marked by my judgment and purification.  What I have not accomplished by blessings and gifts, I will accomplish by judgment and purification.  My people, my church is desperately in need of this judgment.  They have continued in an adulterous relationship with the spirit of this world.  They are not only infected with sin, but they teach sin, pamper sin, embrace sin, dismiss sin…Leadership unable to handle it…fragmentation, confusion throughout the ranks.  Satan goes where he will and infects who he will.  He has free access throughout my people and I will not stand for this.

My people specially blessed in this renewal are more under the spirit of the world than they are under the Spirit of my baptism.  They are more determined with fear for what others will think of them, fears of failure and rejection  in the world, loss of respect by neighbors and superiors and those around them than they are by fear of me and fear of infidelity to my word.  Therefore your situation is very weak.  Your power is so limited.  You cannot be considered at this point in the center of the battle and the conflict that is going on.

So this time is now come upon all of you – a time of judgment and of purification.  Sin will be called sin. Satan will be unmasked.  Fidelity will be held  up for what it is and should be.  My faithful servants will be seen and will come together.  They will not be many in number.  It will be a difficult and a necessary time.  There will be collapse, difficulties throughout the world, but – more to the issue – there will be purification and persecution  among my people. You will have to stand for that you believe.  You will have to choose between the world and me.  You will have to choose what word you will follow and who you will respect.  And in that choice what has not been accomplished by the time of blessing and gifts will be accomplished.  What has not been been accomplished in the baptism and the flooding of gifts of my Spirit will be accomplished in a baptism of fire.  The fire will move among you individually, corporately, in groups and around the world.  I will not tolerate the situation that is going on.  I will not tolerate the mixture and the adulterous treating of gifts and graces and blessings with infidelity, sin,  and prostitution.   My time is now among you.  What you need to do is to come before me in total submission to my word, in total submission to my plan.  In the total submission of this hour, what you need to do is to drop the things that are your own, the things of the past.  What you need to do is to see yourselves and those whom you have responsibility for in the light of this hour of judgment and purification.  You need to see them in that way and do for them what will best help them to stand strong and be among my faithful servants.

For there will be casualties.  It will not be easy, but it is necessary. It is necessary that my people be in fact my people, that my church be in fact my church, and that my Spirit in fact bring forth the purity of life, purity and fidelity to the gospel.  http://www.musingsat85.com/myblog/

Holy Spirit Cannot be Tamed

The profession of faith itself, as Saint Paul reminds us in today’s first reading, "is only possible because it is prompted by the Holy Spirit: 'No one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit'. When we pray, it is because the Holy Spirit inspires prayer in our heart. When we break the cycle of our self-centerdness, and move beyond ourselves and go out to encounter others, to listen to them and help them, it is the Spirit of God who impels us to do so. When we find within a hitherto unknown ability to forgive, to love someone who doesn’t love us in return, it is the Spirit who has taken hold of us. When we move beyond mere self-serving words and turn to our brothers and sisters with that tenderness which warms the heart, we have indeed been touched by the Holy Spirit".

"It is true", observed the Pontiff, "that the Holy Spirit brings forth different charisms in the Church, which at first glance, may seem to create disorder. Under His guidance, however, they constitute an immense richness, because the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of unity, which is not the same thing as uniformity. Only the Holy Spirit is able to kindle diversity, multiplicity and, at the same time, bring about unity. When we try to create diversity, but are closed within our own particular and exclusive ways of seeing things, we create division. When we try to create unity through our own human designs, we end up with uniformity and homogenisation. If we let ourselves be led by the Spirit, however, richness, variety and diversity will never create conflict, because the Spirit spurs us to experience variety in the communion of the Church.

"The diversity of members and charisms is harmonized in the Spirit of Christ, Whom the Father sent and whom He continues to send, in order to achieve unity among believers. The Holy Spirit brings unity to the Church: unity in faith, unity in love, unity in interior life. The Church and other Churches and ecclesial communities are called to let themselves be guided by the Holy Spirit, and to remain always open, docile and obedient".

He continued, "Ours is a hopeful perspective, but one which is also demanding. The temptation is always within us to resist the Holy Spirit, because He takes us out of our comfort zone and unsettles us; He makes us get up and drives the Church forward. It is always easier and more comfortable to settle in our sedentary and unchanging ways. In truth, the Church shows her fidelity to the Holy Spirit in as much as she does not try to control or tame Him. We Christians become true missionary disciples, able to challenge consciences, when we throw off our defensiveness and allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit. He is freshness, imagination and newness".

Our defensiveness is evident "when we are entrenched within our ideas and our own strengths – in which case we slip into Pelagianism – or when we are ambitious or vain. These defensive mechanisms prevent us from truly understanding other people and from opening ourselves to a sincere dialogue with them. But the Church, flowing from Pentecost, is given the fire of the Holy Spirit, which does not so much fill the mind with ideas, but inflames the heart; she is moved by the breath of the Spirit which does not transmit a power, but rather an ability to serve in love, a language which everyone is able to understand. In our journey of faith and fraternal living, the more we allow ourselves to be humbly guided by the Spirit of the Lord, the more we will overcome misunderstandings, divisions, and disagreements and be a credible sign of unity and peace".
